Day 1 - Today you depart the United States on
your overnight flight to Athens, Greece. Naturally,
meals will be served and optional inflight
entertainment will be offered. Please consult
your flight schedule for pertinent details.
Day 2 - Upon arrival in Athens,
you will transfer to your hotel for check-in procedures.
The remainder of the afternoon and evening will
offer an opportunity to begin your exploration
of this 3,500-year-old city. The early evening
is a wonderful time to visit the Acropolis.
Day 3 - Morning departure for
panoramic city tour and a visit to the National
Archeological Museum with its treasures from one
of the greatest western civilizations. The afternoon
will offer a trip to Ancient Agora, the marketplace
which formed the political heart of Athens from
600 B.C. Public transportation and entrance fees
are the responsibility of the participant.
Day 4 - Morning departure (time to be advised)
for Corinth. From Corinth you go on to Nauplia
via Epidaurus, with its magnificent theater.
Upon arrival in Nauplia you will check into your
hotel for a two-night stay.
Day 5 - Today is devoted to the
exploration of Argolis, Mycenae, Tiryns, and Nauplia.
Mycenae is known for its citadel architecture.
Tiryn is a 13th Century B.C. citadel that Homer
called mighty-walled. Nauplia is the most elegant
town in mainland Greece.
Day 6 - Morning departure for Olympia at the
confluence of the Alfeios and Kladeos rivers.
Olympia was a religious and athletic center for
2000 years. On your way you will stop at Mantinea.
Depending on our time of arrival at Olympia
we will visit the excavation site this evening.
Day 7 - Today is devoted to further
exploration of the site and a visit to the Archeological
Museum, one of the richest museums in Greece.
In the afternoon, you will take the ferry to the
island of Zakynthos for a two-night stay.
Day 8 - Today will be devoted to exploring this
attractive and green island with your guide. Part
of the tour may be by boat. The island features
mountain villages, monasteries, and fertile plains.
Day 9 - This morning you will
take the ferry to the island of Cephalonia, the
largest of the Ionian Islands. The day will be
devoted to exploring this fascinating island of
mountains, beaches, churches, villages, and subterranean
caves. The first inhabitants of the island are
dated back to 50,000 B.C. You will stay on the
island tonight.
Day 10 - Morning departure for
mainland and the road trip to Igoumenitsa.
Day 11 - This morning you continue
on to Ioannina. On the way you will stop at Dodona
with its Oracle of Zeus dating to at least 1,000
B.C. Ioannina is the capital of the Epuris region.
You will spend the night in Tsepelovo.
Day 12 - Today you will tour Vikos Gorge, carved
by the Voidomatis River, from Monodendri to
Papingo to Konitsa.
Day 13 - Morning departure for a half day rafting
trip from Konitsa. In the afternoon/evening you
will travel to Kalambaka.
Day 14 - Today is devoted to the exploration of
the Meteora. Originally there were 24 monasteries
built on the sandstone towers of the area. Meteora
means soaring rocks. Today there are only six
monasteries remaining.
Day 15 - This morning you depart
Kalambaka for Delphi, known as the dwelling place
of Apollo from the 8th Century B.C. The Oracle
was abolished in 393 A.D. Today you will also
hike the Phaedriades.
Day 16 - The entire day will be devoted to the
exploration of the Delphi site.
Day 17 - Today you depart Delphi for Athens.
On the way you will visit either Sounio with its
Temple of Poseidon, or Marathon. The Marathon
Plain is the sight of the battle between the Athenians
and the Persians. The Athenians were the
victors.
Day 18 - Morning departure from your hotel for
the Athens airport and your return flight to the
United States. Naturally, meals will be served and
inflight entertainment offered. Please consult
your flight schedule for pertinent details.
